Stephanie Joy Pelia’s IELTS Experience

(This post was originally published on 3rd February 2017. It was added to my blog by taking permission from the writer. Thank you, Dr. Stephanie Joy Pelia, for allowing me to add your post to this blog)

First of all, I would like to thank all the members of this lovely group for being really helpful with regards to the PLAB process. You guys are awesome!

I got the required IELTS band on my first try with less than a week of preparation (I had prior work commitments at that time). I’d like to share how I prepared for each subtests. I took the UKVI Academic IELTS exam, for those who may ask.

LISTENING:

I listened to several test samples over at youtube (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCB55fWEY3ltXxXEHj2GwL4w), and I practiced until I got a band range of 8.0-9.0. I think it would help if you familiarize yourself with different kinds of native English accents; you can do so by watching American/Australian/British/Canadian/New Zealand movies and TV shows.

READING:

For this subtest, I really didn’t bother to read each article extensively. I basically did a quick run-through of the questions first before skimming through the reading passages.

I used http://ieltsonlinetests.com/ as a resource for sample reading exams.

WRITING:

Admittedly, I’m not a very good writer as it takes me quite a long time to compose my thoughts. Whenever I did timed practice writing sets, I usually finish task 2 but I rarely hit the 150 word count in task 1 (the same thing happened to me in the actual exam, LOL).

For this part, I don’t think it’s necessary to use highfalutin words. You just really need to get your point across the reader of your essay.

I used the PEEL format, which stands for: P-point, E-elaborate, E-example, and L-link. First, you must state your point and provide additional information regarding your stance. Then, provide a personal experience or an example pertaining to your point. Finally, use linking ideas/statements to make your statements coherent.

SPEAKING:

Not too sure if I can provide any advice here as I winged this part because I lacked time to practice (and it shows with the relatively lower score that I got).

Just like what everyone else in this group says, the key is to practice, practice, practice.

You can do it, guys!
