I didn’t study much for ielts. I just did the online british council sample tests in real time exam conditions ( undisturbed and timed myself ) and was satisfied with my performance. Other than that I watched the tutorial videos given on the british council practice tests website (http://takeielts.britishcouncil.org/prepare-test/british-council-online-resources) and also went through random tutorial videos on your tube.
My only suggestion for you is to practice English. Speak in English , write on forums regularly and watch English movies.
You’ve to be very alert during the exam so that you can fully focus on the listening section so sleep well before the exam.
For IELTS material, you can have a look here- https://www.facebook.com/groups/doctor.plab/files/
IELTS certificate validation (asked by a colleague in June,2015).
Please ask the GMC yourself too if there’s any confusion as the rules and regulations keep changing

PS: You will need to give UKVI IELTS to apply for TIER 2 work visa as mentioned on

Make sure your test center is in the list

Please confirm with GMC (http://www.gmc-uk.org/about/contactus/contact_2_4.asp) to see if they accept UKVI academic IELTS for PLAB as well

I gave my ACADEMIC UKVI IELTS in October, 2015 in Manchester , UK. I got 8.0 plus in all modules but got a 6.5 in writing.

Similarly a colleague also gave her UKVI IELTS and got a low score in her writing.

we both had 7.5 plus in the writing module of our regular academic IELTS.

Please be careful if you plan to give UKVI IELTS to cover both GMC (A score of at least 7.0 in each of the four areas tested . And an overall score of at least 7.5 ) and UKVI requirements ( 4.0 overall, and in each of the four skills)
