GPST Application Overview

There are three steps of applying for the General Practice Specialty Training or GPST.

Application Process

1. Stage 1 or Longlisting

Stage 1 is not an exam itself. Stage 1 only refers to the submission of your online application via Oriel. You can read more about Stage 1 here.

2. Stage 2 or MSRA (Multi-Specialty Recruitment Assessment)

Stage 2 is a computer-based exam which has two parts:

  1. Professional dilemmas; 58 questions in 110 minutes.
  2. Clinical problem solving; 98 questions in 75 minutes.

Candidates who score 575 or higher (candidates in the top ten per cent) are exempted from taking the Stage 3. You can read more about Stage 2 here.

3. Stage 3 or Selection Assessment Center.

Stage 3 is an exam which has two parts:

  1. Three simulated consultations; one with a patient, one with a patient’s relative and one with a healthcare professional.
  2. Written prioritisation exercise tests your ability to rank and justify five tasks in a time-pressured situation.

You can read more about stage 3 here.
