Dr. Omar Alam’s CV Making Guidelines

Please check Dr. Omar Alam’s post for making a CV.

Do Not Worry

When I saw my friends’ CVs after my PLAB 2, I got worried, because most of them were 8-page long CVs. But the length of the CV does not matter. It is the content and the way that the content is presented that matters more than anything else.

Do not worry if you see other people having a long CV. I myself had a 3-page long CV after I had passed PLAB 2.

a

Is a CV Really Needed?

Yes and No. It is important to have a CV because you can be asked for a CV at any point. But it is totally possible that you might never be asked to show your CV. I myself have not been asked to show my CV anywhere.

I once took my CV to a job interview where it was returned back to me without even checking it because they said they had my NHS jobs profile. But my friends have been asked to show their CVs during job interviews.

a

What Do We Use if Not CVs?

We use online profiles. When the time comes, you will get to know about them. So do not worry for now.

.

Online Profiles

When you apply for non-training jobs in the UK, your online NHS Jobs profile will be your CV. When you apply for training posts, your portfolio will be your CV.

WORK EXPERIENCE

  • Feb 2014 – Aug 2014
    House Officer
    Dept. of Medicine
    Baqai University Hospital, Karachi

This was part of my House job/Internship. I worked in the department of medicine for a designated six months. I learned how to take a thorough history of a patient, perform a detailed examination, make relevant differentials and devise an appropriate management plan in terms of investigations and treatment plan.

In the morning and evening rounds, I presented cases in detail.  I frequently attended educational seminars, workshops and CME meetings.

.

  • Aug 2014 – Feb 2015
    House Officer
    Dept. of Surgery
    Baqai University Hospital, Karachi

This was also a part of my House job/Internship. I learned to take a proper history, perform examination, and make differentials for a surgical patient. I also presented cases in ward rounds and morning meetings.

I observed and managed surgical elective cases and emergencies like acute abdomen, intestinal obstruction, cholecystectomy, pancreatitis and diabetic foot.

In the A & E, an Orthopaedic Surgeon supervised me in the management of fractures, applying plasters and bandaging the wounds. I also attended operation theater, assisted in various surgeries and helped in suturing.

.

  • Feb 2015 – Aug 2015
    Senior House Officer
    Dept. of Surgery
    Baqai University Hospital, Karachi

I participated in ward rounds for General Surgery, Orthopedics, Urology, ENT, Plastic Surgery. On a daily basis, I presented cases to consultants. I was also doing long on-call duties (8AM to 12PM the following day) every third or fourth day.

On a weekly basis, I participated in case meetings where I presented cases to fellow junior doctors and consultants. I also attended CME courses frequently and did various workshops

.

  • Aug 2015 – Jan 2017
    Resident Medical Officer
    Dept. of Nephrology
Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT), Karachi

I was allotted beds in the Nephrology Emergency ward and I was the doctor in charge of those beds. I had to take history, examine the patients and update their treatment charts accordingly. I presented cases in the daily rounds – first to the senior resident in charge and then to the professor.

I also had long on-call duties every fourth day (from 8 AM to 12 PM the following day) and had to look after all the patients in the ward.

I also worked in the main Nephrology Emergency where triage was performed. Most patients presented with signs and symptoms of fluid overload or uremia. I learnt to assess them quickly, perform quick examination and investigations before making a decision about their treatment plan.

I also worked at four different dialysis centers associated with SIUT. I was the only doctor at these dialysis centers. My duty included both medical and non-medical responsibilities. Each center used to see 50 to 100 dialysis on a daily basis. I used to see all of these patients, educate them about their condition, discuss their dietary options and restrictions and keep an eye on their weight. I also had to deal with emergencies at the dialysis centres.

Therefore, I can efficiently deal with nephrological emergencies in the ward and have learned all emergency procedures for acute management of a patient (like pulmonary edema, seizures due to hypocalcemia or hypocalcemia, severe acidosis, bleeding from burst arteriovenous fistula, loss of consciousness, anuria). I can also carry out daily ward responsibilities such as venipuncture, doing arterial blood gas, IV cannulation. I have also passed central venous catheters in dialysis patients under supervision.

  1. Thank you for uploading this. Amazing CV. Just a few typing errors…

Objective: to move forwards* in my career (drop the s)

Professional registration: “GMC Registration”* (wrote that twice)

Work Experience: Hypocalcemia or hypocalcemia* (wrote the same word twice)

Personal Goals: Take part in researches* (drop the es)

References: Letters of recommendations* (drop the s)

  2. I have only a few months of clinical experience after my internship. would that be a problem when looking for jobs?

  3. Thankyou for sharing your CV with us and guiding us through. Sir wana ask 1 thing… u started your MBBS in may 2008 and you were done with by nov 2013 then how come you were still doing internship till feb 2015??? Aren’t your internship was included in this 5 year course from may 2008 to nov 2013???

  4. Great effort is done over here. Thank you for this informative blog Naseer. I have a question if you don’t mind me asking; what sorts of things could be done to enhance CV if someone is not currently working and waiting for PLAB results?

  5. I read all the steps you mentioned, really appreciated, I am Dr. Milton Barua, MBBS 2005, from Bangladesh, Fcps in medicine 2016, MD in endocrinology and metabolism from BirBIR hospital 2018, and MRCP recently, working as assistant professor in a government hospital, what will be the best possible way to UK for me, please help.

  6. Respected Sir, I need ur guidance. I passed my mbbs in 2005 and did postgraduation in pathology from 2007 – 2010 from India. Since then working as pathologist in medical college in India. I wish to pursue PLAB. What are prospects for old IMG. How should I pursue. Will my teaching experience in subject of pathology in India help. Should I pursue PLAB or Mrcp pathway. Please guide.

    1. PLAB is easier. Age does not matter. Teaching experience will add to your CV. All the best! 🙂

  7. Sir I will be completing my 1 year internship in March 2019. I am planning to join as a tutor in pathology pr pharmacology department and study for plan simultaneously.. please let me know if teaching experience will help me in my endeavor or I it’s a waiste of time and I should just concentrate on plan

    1. Teaching experience will help. But if you wish to work in a clinical capacity in the future, it would be best to have a clinical job now, instead of a teaching job. All the best! 🙂
