The day after your PLAB 2 result, the GMC will email you to congratulate you and inform you that you can begin your process for GMC registration.
How to Begin the Process
- Log in to your GMC Online account.
- Click on My Registration.
- Go to My Applications.
- Click on Apply.
- Click on Continue with application
- Click on No (click on Yes if you have EC right).
- Click on No (click on Yes if you want to register as a specialist or a GP).
- If you have completed an acceptable pattern of internship, click on Yes.
- Click on Apply.
The above 9 steps will lead you to the GMC registration form.
GMC Registration Form
This form has 8 sections. Make sure the details that you enter here are correct, as they will stay on your record forever.
1. Internship
Here you will provide details of your internship. You will include the dates and specialty for each rotation separately. Do not put your whole period of internship on one line.
Make sure the details that you enter in this form correlate with the details on your internship certificates.
2. Name Details
Write your full name.
3. Recent Professional Experience
Here you have to provide details of your work experience in the last five years. You also have to account for any gaps between your employment.These gaps include holidays and study breaks.
Each and every single day has to be accounted for. You can not have a gap even for a single day in this section. If applicable, you also have to provide documentary evidence for your activities during these gaps.
4. Registration and Licensing
Here you will provide details of your registration with the local medical authority from the country where you have practiced medicine.
I entered details of my registration with Pakistan Medical and Dental Council.
5. Fitness to Practice – Your Health
Here the GMC wants to know if your health can affect your fitness to practice.
I checked all five boxes with No. But make sure you read properly before answering these questions.
6. Declaration of Fitness to Practice
Here the GMC wants to know if you have had any problems with any law enforcement authorities.
I checked all 12 boxes with No. But make sure you read properly before answering these questions.
7. Final Declaration
Here you will sign a declaration, agreeing to GMC’s rules and regulations.
8. Payment
You have to make an online payment of £425 for your application to proceed.
Providing Documents
As soon as you fill the form and make the payment, GMC will send you an email. In this email, the GMC will ask you to send a PDF file to them, containing scanned copies of the following documents:
- Passport.
- Primary medical qualification certificate (MBBS degree).
- Certificate(s) of good standing.
- Evidence of your knowledge of English (IELTS).
- Evidence of completion of an acceptable pattern of internship (House Job certificates).
. - Employer reference form (only for candidates who have worked without registration).
The GMC will give you 28 days, to send these documents. Otherwise, they will close your application and send you a full refund of your application fee. You would then need to start the application process again.
Application Processing
In the next few days, the GMC will do the following:
1. Check the information that you have provided in your application.
2. Contact you and let you know if they need more information.
3. When you have sent them all the information that they need, and they have checked it, they will give you a decision on your application.
4. If they decide to grant your registration, they will ask you to come for an identity and evidence check. You will be asked to take your original documents with you. You can attend this check only if you have pre-booked an appointment.
ID Check
When to Book Your ID Check?
You can book your ID check appointment even before your result comes out. I booked mine as soon as I took my PLAB 2 exam. It’s best to book your appointment as early as possible, because the dates are booked a few weeks or months in advance.
How Long Would I Have to Complete My ID Check?
You will need to have the ID check completed within three months of your application being approved. If you have not attended the check within three months, you will have to complete a new application.
When to Book Your ID Check For?
If all of your documents are in order, it might be ideal to schedule your ID check appointment 4 or 5 weeks after your PLAB 2 result, just to be on the safe side.
Since I had started my internship in Karachi before I got my PMDC registration, I knew my GMC registration process was going to take slightly longer. So I scheduled my GMC ID check appointment 6 weeks after my PLAB 2 result.
What If My Application Has Not Been Approved By The Time I Have My ID Check?
In this case, you would have to book a new ID check appointment. This is why it’s best to book your ID check appointment 4 to 5 weeks after your PLAB 2 result, just to be safe. And if you know there can be an issue with your documents, it’s best to have even more time before your ID check.
How to Make an Appointment?
Go to your GMC Online account. Click on My Appointments. Book and appointment from here.
Which Documents are Needed at the Appointment?
The GMC will send you a list of documents that you need to take with you. This list contains the documents that you had sent to the GMC earlier via email (except for the IELTS certificate – they do not check IELTS certificate at the ID check).
What Happens at the Appointment?
- You sign a declaration form.
- GMC checks original documents.
- GMC takes a photograph of you, for their records.
How Long Does it Take?
The appointment usually lasts for 20-30 minutes.
When Will I get the Licence to Practice?
If everything checks out, the GMC will award you GMC registration and the licence to practice right there and then. You can check this on the Online Register.
When Will I get the GMC Registration Certificate?
It usually takes the GMC 3-10 days to send your GMC registration certificate at the address specified by you.
Summary of GMC Registration Process
- Fill your online application.
- Send your scanned documents to the GMC.
- Wait for the GMC to process your information.

Frequently Asked Questions
1. How long does the registration process take?
It usually takes 2 to 5 weeks. But it depends on individual cases. My process took 36 days. But out of these 36 days, 26 days were taken by my university to reply to GMC’s email. So if they had replied earlier, I would’ve been free from GMC’s processing in less than 2 weeks.
2. When should I book my GMC registration ID check?
This is a personal choice. I made a good estimate of how long it would take for my application to get approved and I booked my ID check a day after I took PLAB 2.
3. For when should I book my GMC registration ID check?
I start my House Job without registration in my home country; I knew that would require an explanation and it would take time. So I booked my ID check for 6 weeks after my result. And my application was approved only 2 or 3 days before my ID check date.
4. What is a Certificate of Good Standing?
It is a certificate issued by your local medical authority to show that, at the time of issuing the certificate, there are no fitness to practise proceedings in progress against you.
5. If I started my internship in my home country without getting registered with the local medical body, what should I do?
First of all, do not panic. You will get your GMC registration. 🙂
Secondly, ask your employer to fill the employer reference form. Bear in mind that the GMC will email your employer to confirm the details provided in this form.
Lastly, the GMC will email you and ask you for an explanation for this unregistered period of work. You should contact your local medical body. They will issue you a letter which might look like this.

Apply for jobs, give job interviews. Go for an attachment. Prepare yourself for Tier 2 visa application.

It’s best to stay in the UK, if you can afford it. Going back home is not a big issue; you may have to come back later for your GMC ID check though.

No, this will not be a problem. But I would strongly advise you to find a job and start working in your home country as soon as possible. This gap can lead to a slight delay in finding your first job. Otherwise it won’t be an issue. Of course, you will have to explain this gap.
Nasser, does this mean we can begin our gmc registration even before completing plab 1&2? So that when we complete plab 2 there will be no time waste waiting for registration before applying to jobs?
I don’t think you can begin your process before you pass PLAB 2. But this is the first thing that you should do after passing PLAB 2.
But you can start applying for jobs as soon as you take PLAB 2 exam.

Since you worked during your House Job without registration, yes, you’ll have to go through the same process as I did (Employer Reference form and explanation from PMDC).
And yes, if your IELTS expires, you’ll need a new one for GMC registration.

I contacted my university hospital’s MS. And I provided an official university hospital email address. Personal and private email addresses were not allowed.
And can u please let us know that can we apply for Good standing certificate from UK as well?
You can apply from anywhere in the world. But you will need to get a few documents signed by your hospital MS. And you can get this done even now. So it’s best to get it out of the way immediately.

Employer reference form was printed out and signed on paper. Employer reference form and the letter from PMDC, both, will be signed and issued only after the GMC inquires about it.

You can send it along with all of your documents or you can choose to wait. If you choose to wait, it will take longer. I did not wait.
But you must wait for GMC to ask for an explanation from the PMDC. This document should not be sent unless asked for; as the GMC sometimes does not ask for this.

As far as I know, there are not. But you need to be registered as a doctor and your internship needs to be recognized from the country where you’ve completed your internship.

1. Roughly 2 to 4 weeks after the course. 4 weeks is ideal after the course.
2. You can shadow around for the first 2 weeks and it helps. Everyone finds the first few weeks difficult, but then adjusts.
3. It is almost always for 6 months.
4. This varies. But after you’ve worked for a while and have a good bank balance, it shouldn’t be an issue.
What do we have to write in hours of clinical practice per week?
Secondly I have a huge gap after my House job. In that I was studying for my Usmle Exams, Then went to US for my observerships, Step2 CS exams etc.
1. I wrote 60 to 70 hours per week, because that was the truth. You should also fill the form truthfully.
2. Again, just fill the form truthfully and you should be fine.

I am Indian who qualified from Russia and have about 6 years gap as I was in the UK and could not do ielts. Now I have done plab 1 and will do plab 2 by October. I read online that GMC counts 6th year of Russian graduation as internship if you provide a letter from your uni. I have tried a lot but could not find the format of that letter anywhere.

So what should I mention in last 5 years experience. I couldn’t find option of career break. The options are like holidays, study, maternal leave or others.. should I go for others and write on my own ? I think you should mention exactly why you took a break of seven years. Because you’ll have to explain it properly.
I suppose choosing others and explaining might the the best option. But you should post this on Facebook and take other people’s opinions who had long career breaks.

You can be asked for absolutely any document during your GMC registration process. There are no set rules.
About the documents u were saying that we need house job certificate which I don’t have would it be fine ?
In that case, your House Job will not be accepted and you can only get provisional registration. This will only allow you to take FY1 jobs.

The GMC is very helpful and understanding.
It is very common for applicants to have issues during registration. I myself had an issue, but it was easily resolved (check the final FAQ from this post).
You should not worry about anything as long as all of your documents are legit.
Hello doctor, I will like to know if a break of 5days after a particular posting in internship will make it unacceptable. There was no break thereafter in the other postings.
5 days is a very small break, so you will be okay. But you might still have to write to explain this break. Don’t worry about it, though. 🙂
Really i can’t find words to thank you dr.naseer for this substantially useful blog .. and i have a situation that i didn’t find it clearly here .. during my internship year i had to repeat one of the rounds which consists of 2 months and that happened because i ‘ve exceeded the limit of days of absence during it .. so my internship will be complete 12 months but will be from 1st of march to 1st of may .. does GMC consider that a gap ??

Is it absolutely necessary that one must be a registered doctor in their country? To make it clear, I’m an Indian who completed his MBBS and compulsory internship from Nepal. However, upon returning to India, I am yet to register with medical council of India (MCI). I wish to write PLAB and register with GMC to work in the UK. So my question is, do I need to be registerd with MCI for this?
No, you do not need to be registered in India. People who have not completed their internship and wish to complete their internship in India have to register with MCI. Because finding an internship (House Job) in the UK is very difficult; it is easier to complete your House Job before moving to the UK.

Since there is no visa category for GMC ID check, you have two options:
1. Get your ID check on your work visa (if your employer allows you and if you have a job).
2. Apply for a visit (tourist) visa.

The GMC can ask for any experience certificates. So you can be asked to provide your experience of working as a resident of anesthesia.
If you have not worked as a GP, you will not be asked to provide certificates of having worked as a GP.
I did graduation in 1995, completed 6 months house job in general surgery and then got a job as medical officer (house job not reqired for job at that time) but worked in internal medicine but did not get certificate for that. I then did postgraduation in medicine and now have an offer from UK for speciality training at uk. Although I have certificates of 4 years training in medicine but cannot fill 3 months internship. How will my case be handled? Please reply, thank you
Since you did not complete your House Job, I am not sure if your House Job will be accepted by the GMC. The GMC might not reply to your question either. So the only way to know might be when you apply for GMC registration.

1. There is no way to know if your internship will be accepted or not. The only way to know is to apply for GMC registration after passing PLAB 2. You can post on Facebook groups to see if others with such gaps had their internship accepted.
2. If your internship is not accepted, you can apply for provisional registration and try to apply for FY1.
3. Getting into FY1 is very difficult for IMGs since most British medical graduates apply for FY1 and there’s no room left for us. Therefore, this route isn’t advisable.
4. UKMLA is expected to go live in 2022. The GMC website mentioned 2019 as the starting date for UKMLA in 2015. But they have revised their schedule now. Kindly check my website for this.

1. She probably will not have to justify this gap. Even if she has to, it should not be a problem.
2. You do not need to provide work experience certificate. But they can always ask for any document.
3. You will need your Certificate of Good Standing when you apply for GMC registration.
Naseer bhai, my tourist visa is expiring right after plab 2. I have read online that i can go for gmc id check on a tier 2 visa. Could you explain this? Does this mean straigth after i pass plab 2 i can be offerred a job without even being officially registered?
Also second question was regarding tier 2 minimiun salary. It says 30000 per year but what if i will only be working for 8 months as i will get plab 2 results by october and want to start working by december and apply for cmt in feb/march. So if i get into cmt i will have to leave by july end. Do they take into account minimium months salary as well?
1. I accepted my job offer before I got registered with the GMC. So yes, this is possible.
2. Your contract would be a year long for 30,000 GBP or more. So you will be okay. Don’t worry. Good luck! 🙂

If we have done medical electives (observership) before final year results were declared, do we need to fill Employers reference form for that although i have certificates from the employers?
Which date is considered as finishing date of our medical studies the last exam date or the result date?
I am not sure about either of your questions. I’m very sorry about this. It would be best to ask the GMC directly about this.
Thank you. Can we skip mentioning about ekectives if they are covered in study period or it would cause any problem later on while applying for jobs if we put it in our CV?
If you do that, then you can never mention those electives later.
